Getting there
Mahakam Ulu is East Kalimantan’s youngest and most remote regency, formed in 2013 from Kutai Barat. Its seat is Ujoh Bilang in Long Bagun district, and it has five districts in all: Long Bagun, Long Hubung, Laham, Long Apari and Long Pahangai. Until recently the journey from Samarinda took 13 to 16 hours by road and river.

Access is changing quickly
Two projects are reshaping logistics here. An airport at Ujoh Bilang — a 750 by 23 metre runway with terminal, administration and fire buildings — stood at 89 per cent completion in January 2026. A 140 km road from Tering to Long Bagun is targeted for 2027 and is expected to lower freight costs and steady commodity prices.

Power is arriving with the Batoq Kelo plant
Construction of a 300 MW hydroelectric plant at Batoq Kelo village, Long Bagun, began in May 2026 under a five-year schedule. Local government has asked the developer to hire locally, and the project includes a 122 km road connecting Mahakam Ulu to Malinau in North Kalimantan.

Roads, power and signal — the honest picture
Of 582 km of regency road recorded in 2025, 420 km — about 72 per cent — was classed in severe disrepair, and 433 km of the network is earth surface. There is no state or provincial road in the regency at all. Thirty-five of fifty villages have households connected to the national grid and eighteen still contain households with no electricity. Of 51 telecommunications towers, 33 come from the government’s remote-area programme rather than commercial rollout, and the operator reported roughly a third of the territory still weakly served in 2026.

The dry season closes the river
This is the constraint most easily missed from a desk. In August 2026 the Mahakam fell far enough that cargo vessels could reach only Long Iram in the neighbouring regency; Long Bagun, Ujoh Bilang, Long Pahangai and Long Apari were cut off, staples were rerouted overland at about Rp 1.5 million per pick-up, and a sack of rice reached Rp 1 million upriver. A referral hospital at Long Pahangai rationed its generator to three hours of shutdown a day because the fuel boat could not get through. Any operation here needs stock buffers sized for that window.
